Dental Exams

Dental exams and cleanings are a vital part of your oral care. They help our dentists to catch any problems early and correct the issue before they have a chance to cause serious and painful problems. The American Dental Association recommends patients visit us twice per year for dental exams and cleanings.

What does a dental exam involve?

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at your initial dental visit. During subsequent visits, you will receive regular check-up exams, which include the following:

Examination of diagnostic X-rays: X-rays are essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.

Oral cancer screening: We check the lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Gum disease evaluation: We examine the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.

Examination for tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.

Examination of existing restorations: We check any fillings, crowns, or other restorative work you have had done in order to determine whether it is in good repair or requires replacement.

What does a professional dental cleaning involve?

Professional dental cleanings are performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include:

Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is actually a living, growing colony of bacteria that feed on food debris on the tooth surface and sometimes beneath the gum line. As they feed, the bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums and cause periodontal disease.
Removal of tartar: Tartar is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Tartar forms above and below the gum line, and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Teeth polishing: Your dental hygienist will also use special polishing equipment to remove stains and plaque that was not already removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

Composite White Filling

A composite (tooth colored) filling is used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. While the most common use for a composite filling is to seal up a cavity, the composite material can also be used to rebuild chipped or worn teeth.

Because composite fillings are white or tooth-colored, they can be closely matched to the color of your existing teeth. Therefore, they are very well suited for use in front teeth or the more visible areas of the back teeth.

As with most dental restorations, composite fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced. They are very durable and will last many years, giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile.

Reasons to get composite fillings:

Chipped teeth
Closing space between two teeth
Cracked or broken teeth
Decayed teeth
Worn teeth

How are composite fillings placed?

Composite fillings are usually placed in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove decay as necessary. The area will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new composite filling is placed. If the decay was near the nerve of the tooth, a special medication will be applied for added protection. The composite filling will then be precisely placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function.

It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold after composite fillings are first placed. However, this will subside shortly after your tooth acclimates to the new filling.

You will be given care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in extending the life of your new fillings.

Digital Dental X-Rays

Dental x-rays are essential preventative diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not otherwise visible during a dental exam. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and create an appropriate treatment plan. Without x-rays, problem areas may go undetected.

3D Digital CT scanner by Carestream:

Get the most advanced x-rays in the state with a digital 3D Cone Beam at Flat Rate Doctors! We are proud to be one of the few offices in the state of Utah to offer 3D Cone Beams to our patients. CT images can be used to help with wisdom teeth extractions, placement of implants and a wide array of dental treatments along with use for our chiropractic services for cervical neck x-rays.

Dental x-rays may reveal:

Abscesses or cysts
Bone loss
Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
Decay between the teeth
Developmental abnormalities
Poor tooth and root positions
Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line

Detecting and treating dental problems at an early stage can save you time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and may even save your teeth from eventually being lost to decay or periodontal disease.

Are dental x-rays safe?

Dental x-rays produce a low level of radiation and are considered safe. Our office uses digital x-rays that have lower radiation amounts than traditional x-rays. The amount of radiation exposure from a full mouth series of x-rays is equal to the amount a person receives in a single day from natural sources. Nevertheless, dentists do take precautions to limit the patient’s exposure to radiation when taking digital x-rays. These precautions include using lead apron shields to protect the body and using modern, fast film that cuts down the exposure time of each x-ray.

How often should dental x-rays be taken?

The need for dental x-rays depends on each patient’s individual dental health needs. Your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend necessary x-rays based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exam, signs and symptoms, age consideration, and risk for disease.

A full mouth series of dental x-rays is recommended for new patients. A full series is usually good for three to five years. Bite-wing x-rays (x-rays of top and bottom teeth biting together) and are recommended once or twice a year at your as part of your dental check

Start the life-changing process with free consultation and payment options.

3D Model of a Dentures attached by 4 implants

A standard denture used here in Orem Utah is a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and surrounding tissue and is one of the most affordable options. Dentures are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and may even enhance your smile. An immediate denture is placed after extractions and can be used as a final denture, or it can be used during the healing process with implant dentures.
There are three types of dentures: complete dentures, partial dentures and implant dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, providing a new chewing surface and preventing other teeth from shifting. Implant dentures are a complete denture that uses dental implants to hold the denture in place and are the best option.

A complete denture may be either “conventional” or “immediate.” The conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, which usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made to the immediate denture.

Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years, but they do not last forever. They may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear. Our dentures are stored digitally so if you lose or damage them we can have them made with a click of a button.

Dental Crowns

Dental x-rays are essential preventative diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not otherwise visible during a dental exam. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and create an appropriate treatment plan. Without x-rays, problem areas may go undetected.

Crowns for teeth restoration

The standard restoration for a tooth with damage that can no longer be repaired that is broken, discolored, badly shaped or has too much decay for a dental filling is a dental crown that completely covers the prepared tooth. The crown is fitted over the original tooth after any decay has been removed. Flat Rate Dental specializes in crowns and will give you a beautiful restoration that will look, feel and look like your natural teeth.

We offer the latest technology in crowns

Space age technology has revolutionized the modern cosmetic crown. State-of-the-art materials and manufacturing techniques now provide new metal-free, all-ceramic crowns that are so life-like, only your dentist will know. In addition, to their dramatically improved aesthetics, not all ceramic crowns match or exceed the strength of traditional restorations. They also eliminate sensitivity to heat and cold as well as allergic reactions.

Full Porcelain Crown

Porcelain crowns made in a nearby dental lab is attractive, strong, stable, and highly resistant to wear. It offers a high level of biocompatibility because it does not contain metal.

A porcelain crown provides the best natural color match to the rest of your teeth and is an excellent choice for front teeth. The aesthetic quality of a porcelain crown is your best option for a crown. Some offices will suggest a Cerec crown, but we do not advise this in-office option as the crown is not as strong and typically does not last as long.

Dental Cleaning

At Flat Rate Dental, we are passionate about preventative care. Our preventive program allows the patient, dentist, and dental staff to engage in a cooperative effort to preserve the patient’s natural dentition and supporting structures.

Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is continued in the dental office through regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth from tooth decay and prevent the need for fillings, root canals, or even tooth replacement.

Sometimes catching a dental condition early is the next best thing to preventing it entirely. For example, if you come in for dental exams every 6 months as recommended by the American Dental Association, we may be able to identify a minor gum disease infection and treat it before you even begin to feel the symptoms.

Prevention helps avoid serious and costly dental problems and is the key to having a healthy, confident, beautiful smile. Schedule your appointment for preventative care with Flat Rate Dental today and get a better shot at enjoying healthy teeth for the rest of your life.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and your smile, covering a wide variety of dental issues and imperfections. Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth shaped porcelain that can be custom shaped and colored to match your teeth by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.

As with most dental restorations, veneers are not permanent and will someday have to be replaced. However, they are very durable and will last many years, making them a great investment in your appearance and self-confidence.

Reasons for porcelain veneers:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Severely discolored or stained teeth
  • Teeth that are too small or large
  • Unwanted or uneven spaces
  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • What does getting porcelain veneers involve?

Getting veneers at Flat Rate Dental usually requires two visits to complete the process, with little or no anesthesia required during the procedure. First, the teeth are prepared by lightly buffing and shaping the surface, reducing it slightly to allow for the thickness of the veneer. A mold or impression of the teeth is taken and a shade (color) will then be chosen by you and your dentist.

On the second visit the teeth will be cleansed with special liquids to prep them for a durable bond. Bonding cement is then placed between the tooth and veneer and a special light beam is used to harden and set the bond.

You will receive care instructions for veneers. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new veneers.

Restorations

It’s great news that the incidence of tooth decay has significantly diminished over the years due to the use of fluorides and an increase in patient awareness. However, teeth are still susceptible to decay, infection, and breakage and sometimes need to be restored back to health. Through improved techniques and modern technology, we are now able to offer more options for restoring a tooth back to its normal shape, appearance and function.

Should your teeth ever require a restorative treatment, you can rest assured knowing we will always discuss the available options with you and recommend what we believe to be the most comfortable and least invasive treatment. Providing you with excellent care is our number one priority when restoring your beautiful smile.

Reasons for restorative dentistry:

  • Enhance your smile
  • Fill in unattractive spaces between teeth
  • Improve or correct an improper bite
  • Prevent the loss of a tooth
  • Relieve dental pain
  • Repair damaged and decayed teeth
  • Replace missing teeth
  • Replace old, unattractive dental treatments
  • Restore normal eating and chewing

Porcelain Fixed Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance designed to replace missing teeth.

There are several types of bridges. Our dentist will discuss the best options for your particular case. Porcelain fixed bridges are the most popular because they resemble your natural teeth. This type of bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to the pontics (artificial teeth) that will fill the gap created by your missing teeth.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last for many years. However, they may need to be replaced or re-cemented at some point due to normal wear.

The reasons for a fixed bridge:

  • Fill space of missing teeth
  • Maintain facial shape
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
  • Restore chewing and speaking ability
  • Restore your smile
  • Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance

What does getting a fixed bridge involve?

Getting a bridge usually requires two or more visits. Your dentist will numb your mouth and make sure you are comfortable, and then prepare the anchor teeth by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Next, a highly accurate impression (mold) is made which will be sent to a dental laboratory where the crowns and pontics comprising the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary bridge will be made and worn for several weeks until your next appointment.

At the second visit, you permanent bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit. Occasionally your dentist may only temporarily cement the bridge, allowing your teeth and tissue time to get used to the new bridge. The new bridge would then be permanently cemented at a later time.

You will receive care instructions at the conclusion of the procedure. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in extending the life of your new permanent bridge.

Periodontal Disease

The word periodontal means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t even know it. This can happen because the disease is usually painless in the early stages. However, even though it is painless, even minor periodontal disease should not be ignored.

What are the signs and symptoms of Periodontal Disease?

  • Bleeding gums – Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss.
  • Loose teeth – Loose teeth are caused by bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers (fibers that support the tooth to the bone), both of which can be caused by gum disease.
  • New spacing between teeth – This is a sign of bone loss.
  • Persistent bad breath – Bad breath may be a sign that you have an excess of harmful bacteria in the mouth.
  • Pus around the teeth and gums – This definitely suggests that there is an infection present.
  • Receding gums – As your gums become stressed and damaged, they will recede from around a tooth and leave it loose and vulnerable.
  • Red and puffy gums – Gums should never be red or swollen.
  • Tenderness or Discomfort – The high levels of plaque, tartar, and bacteria associated with periodontal disease irritate the gums and teeth.

What are the stages of Periodontal Disease?

The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis. This occurs when the toxic byproducts created by plaque bacteria on your teeth cause your gums to become inflamed.

The next stage is periodontitis. As plaque and tartar continue to build up, the gums begin to recede from the teeth. Deeper pockets form between the gums and teeth and become filled with bacteria and pus. The gums become very irritated, inflamed, and bleed easily. Slight to moderate bone loss may be present at this stage.

The most dangerous stage is advanced periodontitis. During this stage, the teeth lose more support as the gums, bone, and periodontal ligaments continue to be destroyed. Unless treated, the affected teeth will become very loose and may be lost. Generalized moderate to severe bone loss may be present.

Advanced periodontal disease is the number one reason for tooth loss. Research also suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy.

Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease. Smoking increases the risk of periodontal disease, so giving up smoking can also help improve your oral health.

What does treatment for periodontal disease involve?

Treatment methods depend upon the type and severity of the disease. If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, and no damage has been done, one to two professional dental cleanings will be recommended. You will also be given instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits.

If the disease has progressed to more advanced stages, a special periodontal cleaning called scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) will be recommended. It is usually done one quadrant of the mouth at a time while the area is numb. In this procedure, tartar, plaque, and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line (scaling) and rough spots on root surfaces are made smooth (planing). This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and gum pockets to shrink. Medications, special medicated mouth rinses, and an electric tooth brush may be recommended to help control infection, speed healing, and prevent reinfection.

If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean.

If you have already lost a tooth to periodontal disease, it can be replaced using various restorative dental procedures. You dentist will explain the options available to you.

Root Canals

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. In order to save the tooth, all the living tissue inside the tooth, including pulp and nerves, is removed and the resulting space is filled with special medicated dental materials. A crown is then placed over the top to restore the tooth to its full function.

Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would die and have to be removed. Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is a good solution, but what they don’t realize is that extracting a tooth will ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems for adjacent teeth.

Root canal treatment is highly successful and usually lasts a lifetime, although on occasion, a tooth will have to be retreated due to new infections.

What are signs and symptoms of a need for root canal therapy?

  • An abscess (or pimple) on the gums
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Severe toothache pain
  • Swelling and/or tenderness
  • Sometimes no symptoms are present

What are the reasons for root canal therapy?

Decay has reached the tooth pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth) Infection or abscess have developed inside the tooth or at the root tip Injury or trauma to the tooth

What does root canal therapy involve?

A root canal procedure requires one or more appointments and can be performed by a dentist or endodontist (a root canal specialist).

While the tooth is numb, a sheet of rubber will be placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva. An access opening is made on top of the tooth and a series of root canal files are placed into the opening, one at a time, removing the pulp, nerve tissue, and infected material. If tooth decay is present, it will also be removed with special dental instruments.

Next, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned to remove all bacteria. Then, the roots and the inside cavity of the tooth will be filled and sealed with special dental materials. A filling will be placed to cover the opening on top of the tooth. In addition, all teeth that have root canal treatment should have a crown (cap) placed. This will protect the tooth, prevent it from breaking, and restore it to its full function.

What happens after treatment?

Your tooth may still be sensitive, but this will subside as the inflammation diminishes and the tooth heals. You will be given care instructions after each appointment. Good oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits will aid in extending the life of your root canal treatment and preventing reinfection.
